I’m not at all happy with the results I get with my old scanner with negatives, so I’m trying an alternative – photographing the negs. The back light is a very cheap lightbox, very powerful and very even. I’ve used the negative holders from the scanner to hold the negs flat. Results so far are encouraging – much quicker, and better quality. It’s also cheaper than having the negs scanned commercially, and I can get a faster turnaround by processing the film myself and then scanning this way. I’ll try some 120 and 127 film too, and also experiment with colour neg film.
